PRAYER UPDATE #614
JOHN JARVIS JAN. 28/14
Hi, We just talked to Ada (in Calgary) tonight and John is making progress little by little with physiotherapist, occupational therapist and lots more treatments to get those weak muscles working, it will take lots of time for him to be back to his old self. Today they started giving him a bit of soft foods & he is swallowing OK (mashed potatoes & other pureed foods). He is not eating much because he still has his tube feeds. Asking for a rum & coke or a beer at times. He stands up a little bit and also uses a walker (short periods of time) with the therapists. They also get him up in a chair for part of the day. His biggest problem is his lungs which causes him to have delirium a few times a week. He is not on the ventilator anymore but has oxygen by nasal prongs. Ada is doing pretty good and is going swimming twice a week so it helps her to 'de-stress' and change her mind from going to the hospital nearly every day. His children go visit him on week-ends so it gives her a bit of free time to do housework, shopping, etc. Hope this info helps you understand his condition.

JOHN JARVIS JAN. 20/14
Here we are one week out of ICU, couple of bad days, delirium came back, couple of good days, hopefully the good days will outnumber the bad days forward. John is now in a 2:1 patient nurse ratio room, small for all his equipment, but MAY get a little bigger room soon. John has only blood pressure medication now, and a little Tylenol, got rid of all the others, hopefully, we will be able to get the food tube removed this week. JJ can’t wait for a steak, in a month or 2. It will all depend on his swallowing. He has a great will, yesterday moved his feet to the side of the bed and with the nurses help stood up with the walker. Physio comes twice a day, building strength, in his lungs, arms and legs. OT once a day. Another month, JJ will be moving himself from the bed to the commode or chair. By spring he will be pushing that walker everywhere. By November, golfing, look out you guys!!!! Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. Miss u all, Ada.

JOHN JARVIS JAN. 12/14
Over the past week, John has made great strides forward, he is up in a lounge chair, uses the commode chair, starting to bug the nurses. For the past 20 hrs. has the trach plugged, so he can speak a little, actually he is talking a lot. Knows the kids and Ada, what to eat, the feeding tube isn’t steak or pancakes, and is handling the nose prongs well. Just very, very weak, but will stand for a minute to get from the bed to the chair. The Internal medical doctor was in today to evaluate his condition to see if he will be ready to move to internal medical ward next week. I have concerns but will discuss them at the doctors meeting on Tuesday. In internal medicine he will have Occupational & speech therapy, along with physio, which will help because he is bored and no patience’s. Hopefully next email will be from new location and another step forward. Cheers Ada

PRAYER UPDATE #608
JOHN JARVIS JAN. 4/14
Happy New Year dear Friends: I'm so glad 2013 is done, it was a SH___ of a year, but 2014 has started very positive. Johnnie Boy, is awake about 90% of the time, delirium about 10%, which a big step. In the last 3 days, is recognizing his kids and me, today I got a big smile and a kiss, and communicates with us by mouth movements. He wants to go home, I'm hungry, and bathroom. He has lots of eye movements, rolls his eyes when the nurses want him to do some-thing. He can be stubborn, today did not want to do his exercises. So have to negotiate. The RT has John on very low setting, 8 & 8 on the respirator, for an hour 4 times a day, tomorrow the RT may try 0 & 0 for an hour. He has handled 8 & 8 pretty good. We need to get to 0 & 0 for days before they will remove the respirator. The nurses are working on a schedule, up at 8, in the chair around 9 and back to bed for a nap around noon. Then up in the chair again. The doctors say it is important for a schedule. Today we were able to get John to stand with 3 of us assisting and the standing machine and he sat on the edge of the bed. What an achievement that was. He has physio every day and they make him work, usually he is ready for nap after. Starting next I think that physio therapy wants his family to assist, I have not talked to the doctors yet. The way I look at it, we are on the first rung of a tall ladder. Another 5 inches of snow, sure make me appreciate PEM. I will see everyone some time the beginning of March when I come down to close up. Thanks for all thoughts & prayers, I will have only positive thoughts in 2014. Cheers Ada

GENE KLOPFER DEC. 27/13
Gene got infection in his right lower leg and foot after his surgery and was taken back to the hospital (Banners Thunderbird Hospital) last Friday, Dec. 20th. They discovered that he wasn’t getting blood circulation to his foot and he was in danger of losing his foot if they didn’t get blood to that area. They discovered that he had a blockage in his leg below the knee. Yesterday, Dec. 26th he went for a 2 ½ hour surgery and found they couldn’t put a stent or balloon into the blockage so needed to do a by-pass. Today Dec. 27th he had another 2 ½ hour surgery where they took a vein from the left leg and put into the right leg to by-pass the blockage. He will be in the hospital for several days yet as they need this procedure to heal and then they need to work on getting rid of the infection on his foot, etc. Please pray for a speedy recovery for Gene.

He is in one rehab facility and Marilyn is also in a different rehab facility for her back as a result of the polio that she had earlier in her life. They are both working hard to get better and to get their family together again. Marilyn can be reached at: Wynwood of Grand Blanck, 5080 Baldwin Road, Holly, MI 48442 Phone #810-695-1308. Prayers, please.

JOHN JARVIS DEC. 19/13
Dear Family of Friends: I do not know where to begin! John is now in the new Calgary South Health Center ICU, he was transferred by medical ambulance on December 12th, to Calgary. This all started out as pneumonia on Nov 24th, then all hell broke loose, which lead to a ventilator on Nov 26th, he was heavily sedated for nearly 3 weeks, the doctors have tested for everything from A to Z, but cannot pin point anything. The understanding is "”community viral pneumonia"", where it came from no one knows. Over the past week, the doctors are trying to wean him off the sedation, he is doing pretty good, but very irritable, which causes blood pressure to rise. You try and fix one thing and another rises. On Monday the doctors inserted a trach, which has relieved some stress for him, over the past couple of days, he has opened his eyes a bit and may react to voices, but does not react to commands yet. I guess some individuals take longer to work the sedation out of their bodies. John will do things his way like he always does. I just wish he would hurry up. Ada is staying at her daughter's for a couple of weeks. John has a team of 7 doctors and they say it takes time, maybe even months, so I will hang in there. Sure do miss all our PEM friends. There is 3 feet of snow around our community and -20 C, and I have very little winter clothes, going shopping soon. We want to thank all our friends for their thoughts and prayers; you are all present in my mind during my sleepless nights. I tell John his golf clubs are getting cold, no reaction!! He will someday. To all our PEM friends, do have very Merry Christmas and celebrate the New Year. Bless you all: Ada. firstname.lastname@example.org

DONNA VEZINA DEC. 14/13
Dear Family of Friends, I wanted you to know that I spent the last two nights at Del Web Hospital after sufferings what I thought was Mini Stroke at the Hockey Game on Thursday evening... Where else would I be when the Coyotes are playing hockey? I was disoriented & things happened that I did not even remember at all so Florian took me to the ER where I spent 2 nights. As the result of 5 big tests I was told that I had a seizure resulting from the Mini Stroke I had 15 years ago. The Neurologist could see an old injury which manifested into a seizure but assured me that the medication he put me on would clear up the problem even tho I will probably have to remain on the medication twice a day. I want to thank all my friends who have been asking about me & assure you that I am OK & will see you tomorrow at church. God is very good to me & all of us. And by the way the Coyotes won 6-3 against the Islanders. Thanks for the prayers, Donna.

GLENN PETERSON DEC. 7/13
While visiting in California, Glenn took sick. They came home immediately and he was taken to the Boswell Hospital on Monday, Dec. 2nd. He had bleeding ulcers in the esophagus. They got the bleeding stopped. His blood was infected because of a bad gallbladder, so that was removed. He also has phenomena so he will be in the hospital for a while yet. Please pray for a fast recovery.
