Where Strangers Become Friends

PRAYER UPDATE #757

======================

GORDON PARTRIDGE JUL. 07/16

Hi everyone, Well at the moment you could knock me over with a feather.  Gord is coming home probably on Monday.  Apparently he isn’t deteriorating or dying soon enough (my words) so they are discharging him.  I knew the room he was in was a temporary thing – palliative care – but assumed he would be if necessary moved to another room.  His doctor came in yesterday and said he thought he could manage at home and had him assessed this morning by a physio therapist and yesterday by the interior health head and they came to the conclusion that he should enjoy his remaining time at home.  I believe I said before in one of my other updates that when a person decides not to carry on with dialysis it could be a matter of a couple of weeks or months – no one knows for sure.  I must say he looks a lot better.  He is off all medication and his kidney function has improved a few degrees.  This is a result of him having dialysis day after day while he was in Kamloops hospital.  He hasn’t changed his mind about his decision not to proceed with dialysis but of course he wants to come home.  A care giver will come in to help but at the moment I don’t know how often.  They will meet me here at home the day he is discharged.  The physio gave him some exercises to do to strengthen his legs.  Our whole family were here on Father’s Day and the boys brought Gord home and we had a lovely time being together.  We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful family.  Thank you to everyone who visited him in Bastion place and who have sent cards and e-mails.  How lucky we are to have such great friends.  Cynthia

PRAYER UPDATE #755

======================

GORDON PARTRIDGE JUN. 16/16

As you know Gord has been through a lot for the last two years and is now currently in Kamloops Hospital undergoing dialysis for his kidneys.  He has had nothing but trouble and setbacks.  All of these things require more surgery and he decided yesterday he can’t take any more and after much thought has decided not to have any more dialysis.  We had a long talk privately, our daughter Julie came up and he had a long talk with her and also with Lynne on the telephone, the dialysis nurse and dialysis doctor and he is positive and at peace with the decision not to have any more treatment.  He is also off all medication except what will make him comfortable.  This afternoon he is being transferred to Bastian House in Salmon Arm so he well be closer to me and his friends if they wish to visit.  If you feel so inclined, I would appreciate your prayers that he won’t linger for weeks or months which would not only be hard on him but the family as well.  We have had 61 wonderful years together, have a beautiful family and it pains me that he has made this decision but respect his wishes and I don’t want to see him go through anything more. We feel so fortunate for all the wonderful times we have had both together as  family and as a couple and the many good years we had in PEM. Cynthia.

CAROLE DEWING MAY 30/16

It is with great sadness to inform you that my wife of 56 years, Carole DeWing, passed away May 2nd after a sudden illness. It was a sudden illness of type B influenza, the type you don't get a flu shot for.  It was complicated by bacterial pneumonia.  Even though we both had type A flu shots, and she had a pneumonia shot, we both thought we had come down with a serious cold until it was too late.  She played golf at Sun City Country Club, Carl.

BEVERLY ANDERSON MAY 20/16

On Wednesday May 17th Beverly Anderson was going into the utility room from the garage. She turned to go back and got her flip flop caught in the scatter rug and she fell back onto the cement floor of the Garage, landing on her right side. That's a pretty far fall and she broke the rotor bone and others in her right shoulder. The bone had deteriorated and the damage is so severe that the Cat Scan shows that  the Doctor cannot do a repair and just insert pins but, Rather,  they have ordered a complete new shoulder and will do a full replacement on Wednesday, May 25th. She can look forward to 6 weeks in a firm cast after surgery and then a long  series of therapy sessions to get back her normal range of motion.
A lesson to be learned for women in their 70's, no flip flops & no scatter rugs on floors! They will no longer be allowed in our house.

GORDON PARTRIDGE FEB. 6/16

After months of worrying and waiting waiting to get the call to go to Vancouver, on Wed. Gord finally got an angiogram using a very mild solution of dye because of his ongoing problem with his kidneys.  Previously we had been told that if it showed a leakage (which they suspected) they would insert a balloon or replace stents if required, if it wasn't a leakage it would mean very extensive surgery. We didn't get results until Thurs. because the Radiologist and Surgeon wanted to confer on the findings. Well you could have knocked me over with a feather.  Before our daughter and I could get to the hospital hoping to see the doctor Gord phoned to say he was being discharged - the angiogram showed nothing - no leaks or anything.  They suspect that what was shown on the previous scan done his past July without dye just showed what was left from the original graft surgery in July 2013.  The good news is almost hard to believe so we hope and pray that these Doctors are right.  We want to thank all of you for your e-mails, kind thoughts and prayers.  They obviously were heard and now we just have to concentrate on his kidneys and getting completely over the pneumonia and his hip replacement.  You never know we may have the pleasure of seeing you all in PEM sometime in the future.

GORDON PARTRIDGE FEB. 1/16

Once again I am asking you to remember Gord on the prayer list.  We have to fly to Vancouver General Hospital where on Wed. they will try and determine the cause for another huge abdominal aortic aneurysm.  They will have to inject a much lower dose of dye because of Gord's low kidney function.  They hope this injection will show a leakage somewhere in the original graft that was inserted in July 2014.  If this is the case hopefully it can be repaired by inserting a balloon or replacing some of the original stents.  If it shows a more difficult problem we aren't sure what if anything they will be able to do.  Unfortunately Gord is still recovering from a hip replacement last July but he has regressed hip-wise due to the fact that he has had pneumonia and is still struggling to get over that.  To complicate the problems even more I myself have been in and out of hospital three times due to anxiety and stress.  It is hard to keep calm with so much worry about Gord on my shoulders.  Your prayers have helped us through the long hurdle of July 2014 so please keep us in your thoughts over the next few weeks.  We wish we were there with you all to renew our old friendships and also to make new ones.  PEM is a wonderful place.  Cynthia

DOUG HUGHES DEC. 26/15

Doug Hughes came down with 2 forms of Leukemia last September. He underwent at that time many tests, blood and platelet transfusions, bi weekly trips to the oncologist for blood draws, had a port installed. In August of this year, Doug came down with the most dreadful leukemia of the brain stem/spinal column. He underwent 16 treatments for this spinal leukemia. On October 12th he had his last chemo treatment, oncologist indicated he was negative but that the cancer was dormant so could reappear etc. Doug had to give up the sport he loved so very much (Pickle Ball) but was able to play bridge for a short period on Fridays. On November 3rd, he started having headaches again but thought it was just a pinched nerve. He was going to the chiropractor several times a week. On Dec 1st he ended up back in the hospital as headaches were bad, he was falling a lot etc. The tests confirmed that the leukemia returned this time with a vengeance in the brain stem, they put in a port in his head to have chemo go through the port. The chemo made him pretty sick and on 12/21 he was transported by paramedics to the hospital, was diagnosed with Renal Failure. On 12/22 he had a catheter installed in his jugular, went through dialysis. After dialysis his blood pressure plummeted, labs kept going down and decision was made for comfort measures in the hope he could spend his final days at home. It turned out that he was unable to come home and was transported to hospice. Doug passed away on 12/24 at 12:49AM. Doug suffered a great deal and he is no longer in pain. He has joined his loved ones in heaven. He loved playing pickle ball, lawn bowling and bridge. There will be no service as this is what he wanted. We thank all of you that reached out to help his wife Barb, family is doing the best they can at this time.

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven,
Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those,

Who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power and the glory,
Now and forever, Amen.
